Why You Absolutely Should Talk About Your Exes On A First Date

Politics. Religion. Past relationships. Weird habits. Bodily functions. Marriage and kids.

These are widely seen as “taboo” topics we’re supposed to avoid on first dates to keep things low-pressure and fun, and yet, they’re some of my favorite topics to bring up on first dates.

Let me explain.

While I agree with the idea that first dates should be low-pressure and fun, that in no way means you have to purposely avoid talking about important, potentially controversial, subject matter with the person sitting across from you (or next to you, if you’re into that). I don’t know about you, but I would rather know sooner than later if a prospective romantic partner is jealous or confident, has a good sense of humor, can playfully challenge me, and knows how to respectfully disagree. In fact, the best first dates I’ve ever had—the rare first dates that got me excited for second dates—involved lengthy discussions about said taboo topics, coupled with some healthy (I repeat, healthy) debate. And let me tell you, finding yourself wrapped up in that authentic mix of flirty and straightforward conversation really ups the attraction level.

That being said, I urge you to grill your first date companions with as many taboo topics and questions as possible— just try to be playful about it. This helps you learn more quickly if you and a potential romantic partner line up in terms of values, passion, humor, and comfortability.

To take it even further, here are five specific reasons you should throw away the notion that taboo subjects should be avoided at all costs on first dates. Let’s move past this taboo talk and dig deeper when getting to know people.

1.) Big talk > small talk.

As I’ve witnessed modern technology and social media explode in popularity over the last five to 10 years, I’ve also witnessed some unfortunate side effects: too much small talk, a lack of listening skills, and purposeful avoidance of possible confrontation. Of course, real conversations are still being had and this doesn’t apply to everyone, but it’s undoubtedly gotten harder for people to truly listen and stay present. I know I’m guilty of this sometimes, so I make it a point to put my phone down and look up. The second I arrive for a date, it’s “phone down, eyes up, ears open (and heart open, too!).”

Being a firm believer in the beauty of human connection and great love, I strive to encourage others to pursue big talk over small talk and welcome discomfort in order to grow. I think it’s crucial to be with someone you can comfortably navigate through light and heavy topics with, so I try to find out as early on as possible if my core values line up with my date’s core values and if our differences are deal-breakers or things we can playfully debate over the days or months or years. To get the ball rolling when I meet someone new, I’ll lightly bring up the dullness of small talk so we can (hopefully) breeze right past it and get down to the good stuff. Taboo subjects are only taboo because they typically bring up various points of view, and people are too afraid of confrontation to dive further into conversation and healthy debate about them. Bringing up these subjects sooner than later will deepen intrigue and connection or show you there’s a lack of connection. Either way, it tells you something you need to know.

2.) You’ll make better use of your time.

One argument I’ve heard from the “no taboo subjects on first dates” crowd is: Bringing up controversial topics on a first date could turn your date off or force out differences that could end the date early. To that I say, wouldn’t you rather know right away if you and your date are able to positively deal with each other and your differences? That simply saves you time. The older you get, the more you come to know what you’re looking for, what you’re open to, and what are definite deal-breakers for you. You also tend to think of your time as more precious, so why waste it? Instead of going on three “decent” dates to figure out if the cutie from the gym or grocery store or dating app—which, let’s be honest, is where most people meet these days—is worth investing more time in, “grill” him/her on the very first date. Just remember that you can talk about serious subjects without taking yourself too seriously.

A first date shouldn’t be a total guessing game or a game of “How Interesting Can I Make Myself Look?” Of course, you’re always looking to be the most interesting, appealing version of yourself when you meet someone. That’s why it’s critical to remember that the right person will be interested in everything from your accomplishments and core values to your quirks and imperfections. So own it all, and share it all. If I’m on a date, I want to have fun and see if there’s a future. I want to know what issues matter to you, if you’re open-minded or narrow-minded, if you have a good sense of humor, what your past relationships have taught you, and if you agree that healthy couples fart in front of each other. (That last one is obviously the most important.) By covering these topics on date one, I’m able to see right away if the person I’m spending time with makes me feel comfortable enough to get real and let my walls down. If my date and I can easily move between topics together and feel comfortable and respected even when we disagree, that speaks volumes to me. On the same token, if we can’t move easily from topic to topic, that tells me just as much.

Something I like to say is, “I’m looking for marriage material, not marriage mañana (tomorrow).” I’m not looking to get married tomorrow, but I’m also not just dating for the free Cabernet and mouth-watering bread pudding (that’s obviously a plus, but I can drink wine and devour dessert on my own, thank you very much). I’m dating to eventually find the person that puts a period at the end of my sentence—and an exclamation point!—rather than a question mark. I understand that not every date is going to leave me with butterflies and that good ole “I can’t end this date without kissing you” feeling, but I want to at least try to get the most out of my time with the people I choose to go on dates with.

3.) It’s a test of confidence and humility.

Two of the most attractive qualities in any person are confidence and humility. These are must-haves for me, because they speak to a person’s likelihood of being jealous and/or unfaithful, or being a dedicated partner and calming force. When someone is genuinely confident, they’re able to build people up and positively deal with others’ emotions because they’re comfortable with their own. This is huge in relationships. It’s also a big reason I like to bring up taboo subjects.

In my experience, bringing up taboo subjects always helps me get a feel for someone’s levels of confidence and humility. I like to see how people handle themselves and if they’re able to share and listen without getting defensive, uneasy, or hostile. When a person can look me right in the eyes and welcome controversial subjects and questions with authentic excitement and assertiveness, that shows me they know who they are and they’re secure enough in who they are to avoid “playing it cool.” After all, confident individuals understand that games and facades are counterproductive to truly getting to know someone.

4.) Like it or not, exes and past relationships should be talked about.

This may sound surprising to some people, but I sincerely want to hear about a potential romantic partner’s exes and past relationships. Yes, even on a first date. This conversation doesn’t always come up on the first date, but I’m happy to discuss it if it does. Why? Because the way someone talks about their exes and past relationships speaks volumes about who they are, their capacity for healing and forgiveness, and it lets you know if they’re weighed down by any resentment or unresolved issues. I think we can all agree that this is pretty important information to have.

I’m of the school of thought that if you don’t want to talk about your past relationships or hear about someone else’s, you’re weighed down by some combination of jealousy, insecurity, and resentment. Diving into the exes talk doesn’t have to complicate everything, but it definitely will if one or both parties isn’t/aren’t secure in who they are.

The truth of the matter is, a lack of desire to hear about a potential romantic partner’s past relationships comes from a lack of confidence in oneself. If I’m dating someone, I want them to know about my past relationships, and I want to know about theirs. To me, that’s crucial in order to deeply know someone, grow with them, and develop a healthy, passionate sex life. And it can keep you from being blindsided by negative information and infidelity down the road.

5.) Give yourself permission to cut the BS, and you’ll have more fun!

I’m going to be real here: Dating can be exhausting. It’s alarming how quickly you can go from feeling excited about someone to being let down by them or your lack of connection to them. But, that’s how it goes. Sometimes you’ll meet someone and feel an utter lack of chemistry, which will keep you from wanting to be vulnerable and open up. It happens, and I completely get that.

But when it comes to people you actually feel something for, give them and yourself permission to cut the BS and really explore. Whether you know exactly what you’re looking for or not, human connection is the most incredible thing we have. You should never feel like you have to avoid certain topics in order to seem laid-back and intriguing. In today’s world of instant gratification and having a seemingly endless number of dating apps at our fingertips, it’s actually more refreshing to own who you are and be vulnerable rather than indifferent and dispassionate. Be flirty and forward and say what you feel. Ask real questions, bring up taboo subjects, and have fun. Let down that silly wall of, “This is a first date, I have to be extra cool.” There’s no need to worry about sharing too much early on because there will always be new things to share about yourself and learn about the other person. And the right person will want to learn all the nitty gritty details about you.

10 things I learned through having a baby

At 30, my pregnancy had been unplanned with my boyfriend of two years. I was two months pregnant when we traveled through Asia, and that’s where I told him I was keeping the baby. He was upset—after all, he had just turned 28 a couple of months earlier. We’d been in Phuket, Thailand when I told him. A few days later, we were in Taipei, Taiwan, having lunch, seated across from his best friend—breaking the news. After that, the idea of being a father seemed to bother him less and less, and slowly, he grew to embrace it.

Since we hadn’t intended on becoming parents so soon, I was completely in the dark on what to expect from the pregnancy and delivery, and on what to expect the first couple of months. I didn’t end up reading any guides or books on motherhood, but here are some key things I definitely learned.

Don’t feel ashamed I went through my entire pregnancy, and even the first several weeks after delivery, feeling self-conscious for not being married and still living in an apartment, and I felt like everyone was judging me. No one actually ever said anything to me—in fact, the support and love I received was overwhelming, but I had to learn that my son’s life was bigger than any feelings of shame or inadequacy that I felt.

Stockpile healthy snacks I experienced so much nausea and morning sickness in months 3–8 that I learned the term morning sickness was a pile of BS. I was stricken with vomiting and nausea at all hours of the day or night nearly every day. If I woke up and didn’t immediately eat something, I’d throw up. If I was lying down too long and got up too quickly, I’d throw up. If I didn’t eat something every hour, I’d throw up. If I took vitamins without food... you get the point. Fill your pantry with healthy snacks and easy-to-prep small meals so you can stave off sickness. And keep your purse supplied. Always have food on-hand, and if you don’t want to gain excessive weight, ensure you have smart options.

SHOCKER: my water breaking wasn’t quite like the movies One of my fears was that my water would break while in the shower. Guess what? Yup—that happened. It was my sister’s birthday and I remember stepping out of the tub feeling like I was dripping off more water than usual. Next I thought maybe I was tinkling myself a bit, which can happen when you’re far along. My boyfriend was on a work call upstairs and dismissed it as me being paranoid. But when the leaks kept happening, he finally believed me, and we threw our overnight bags together and rushed to the hospital. There was no great, continuous outpouring of fluids—it was a sporadic leakage every couple of minutes... which went on for hours. Hollywood would have you believe that gallons of warm fluids splash your feet and then a baby magically appears in your arms an hour later, but it was exactly 24 hours from when my water broke that my son was born.

The biggest bowel movement of my life It took me over 22 hours from my water breaking for my cervix to fully dilate for me to begin active labor. I asked the nurses what I was supposed to do, and they told me to push like I was passing the biggest bowel movement of my life. Wait—what? Push like I’m taking the biggest dump ever?? Yes. So for the next 90 minutes, I breathed in and pushed for as hard and as long as I could, breathing out only when I couldn’t push anymore—in unison with my contractions. In front of a full-length mirror (front row seat!), while snapping at my boyfriend to keep the ice chips coming. I was spared the situation of actually having a bowel movement—the worst I suffered was some leakage from the intense pushing I did. I pushed so hard I felt like my head would pop. But once my son’s head crowned and I overcame that final hurdle, the ring of fire, those 90 hellish minutes were worth every second.

I felt like I was bonding more with my breast pump than baby My son was born covered in green poop, with the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around his neck—the result of a long labor after my water broke. He didn’t cry out when he was born—it took a little extra effort, so I only got to hold him a few seconds before he was whisked away to NICU for tests and monitoring. After my doctor sewed me up (they had to cut me a bit to make way for my son’s head to prevent tearing), the Lactation Consultant came in and walk me through pumping. She said it was very important to start pumping as soon as possible to make colostrum and build supply. It took me three days of pumping every two hours for my milk to come in. My baby was formula-fed while in the NICU for the first day, and he already preferred the bottle over my breast. I cried and cried, feeling helpless and like a bad mom for not getting him to take my breast, and I tried enticing him with droppers of milk to get him on my breast, without success. A few days later when we took him to his first Pediatrician appointment, the doctor said he’d lost too much weight, so reluctantly, I started giving him bottles of formula/breast milk instead of trying to eyedropper milk alongside my nipple to try and get him to latch. Presently, I still express milk and supplement with formula. I pump 6 to 7 times a day, and I feel like I’m always in my chair pumping. Always drinking water. Always eating oatmeal and popping lactation supplements. Always applying nipple balm. Always obsessing over how many ounces I’m getting (or not getting). Cleaning pump parts. Pumping again. Over and over and over.

I also felt like I spent more time cleaning bottles than bonding with baby We primarily use Dr. Brown’s bottles. These bottles have SIX parts to each bottle. The cap, the nipple, the white thing, the blue tube thing, the flat round piece when mixing the formula, and the bottles themselves. If you didn’t think dishes were terrible before, wait until you have over twelve bottles that you’re standing over the sink soaping down and scrubbing thoroughly so that your sweet little one isn’t sucking down any nasties. And the back pain...it’s such a strain standing over the sink for several minutes scrubbing away. I haven’t found one cleaning method that saves time while making me feel confident in the cleanliness of our bottles and pump parts—I’ve tried boiling and the dishwasher kits... I don’t own a microwave so I can’t speak to the sterilization bags. Same with the countertop steamer appliances. If I have to soap down and scrub the parts any way, might as well just hand-clean them all and air dry, or pop them into the dishwasher for sterilization. My son currently eats 5-6 ounces every 2-2.5 hours, and that’s a lot of cleaning, my friend.

Post-partum bleeding Nine months of being period-free is a beautiful thing, but during those nine months, your body is producing more blood. I gained 50 pounds during my pregnancy, most of that was extra blood and fluid retention. After delivering my son, the next 3–4 weeks were pretty much my body purging itself of the extra blood and fluids. It’s not a period—I experienced no cramping or PMS whatsoever, but your body is constantly shedding nasties as it tries to snap back into shape. Another little nugget I learned is that I could potentially delay the return of my period by frequently breastfeeding and pumping. My son is three months old and I see no sign of my period coming back soon, and that’s fine by me!

My boobs are no longer mine Through nursing, I learned a few things about the areola and nipples. It feels as if my breasts have become these alien beings attached to my body. Areolae darken and the diameters increase significantly—this is to help newborns zero in on the breast for suckling. I also learned babies properly latch onto the breast by getting as much of the areola in their mouth—not just the nipple. And about the nipple—I had no idea it would secrete milk from more than one hole. Nipples have several holes which then release milk for baby. Another fun fact? There will come a moment when you’ll hear your baby cry and your nipples will start sprinkling out milk—Always have nursing pads!

Routine is everything My son craves routine and structure. From hospital to home, he was fed at consistent times each and every day. Each day, after his first bottle, I carry him into the living room where he spends the next couple of hours playing on his piano play mat, which he loves. Then he has another bottle—I make sure to change his diaper after each feeding. My boyfriend and I go to bed late—the earliest being midnight, so we wanted our son to be on a similar sleep schedule, and it works out great. Around 9pm, we turn off most lights, turn the TV volume down, and get him in the mood to relax and go night-night. He typically has a bottle and gets very sleepy at this hour. He may doze off, and around 11:30pm, we’ll wake him to give him a final feeding and diaper change. Then we swaddle him. Swaddling is everything. It makes him feel snug and secure, akin to being in the womb, and it’s lights out, every time. He’ll sleep from 12–12:30am to 8–8:30am. If I didn’t get this window of sleep each night, I’d be a total zombie trying to meet his needs and keep him happy.

Letting him cry it out is totally okay I don’t rush to console him when he starts being fussy or goes all out screaming and crying. I’m very diligent with sticking to our routine so if he cries, I know he’s getting sleepy, has a poopy diaper, or he’s scared himself (babies startle very easily their first few months). He’s gotten pretty good about self-soothing—he’ll suck on a finger or three, or he’ll close his eyes after a couple minutes of crying and take a little power nap. In the mornings during the first week or so when we were building up to him sleeping a full 8 hours, he’d stir in his crib and quietly cry out. I’d resist getting up to soothe him by waiting to see if he soothed himself first. Half the time, he did. The other half, I’d keep the lights out and give him his binky to suck on and he’d fall right back to sleep while suckling, all swaddled up snugly. Now at 3 months, my son is constantly cooing and playing with his hands and feet and grabbing his toys. Sometimes he’ll cry out, but he first self-soothes with his fingers. Some moms choose to always scoop their babies up and calm them, and that’s 100% okay to do, too. You always learn to do what’s best for your particular little one. There’s more than one right way to do something, and we’re all in this journey of motherhood together!

I'm just pricing up car insurance, I currently have a provisional licence and i take my driving test next week, I'm doing insurance quotes for a 2005 volkswagen polo s 55 petrol 3 door Manual car, and I've being looking at prices for provisional drivers and newly passed drivers and the prices are ridiculous. Provisional is coming in at approx 1300, which I can cope with for the year but as soon as I pass my test BAM! prices are looking at about 2,700. I've done everything right according to the advice in the internet, we have a secure garage, off-road parking, during the day it will be kept in a secure office car park. I've tried confused.com, comparethemarket, confused.com, gocompare etc and the prices between provisional and full licence are topping 1,200 in difference. Does anyone know of any websites designed for new drivers or maybe places i could look and get quotes which aren't on comparison websites? or maybe any tips that I could use to reduce the quotes because they are ridiculous.
